Representaion Concering Books Vládkyně jestřábů (Darkover - Publication Order #16)

She had rejected her noble birthright and embraced the freedom only a man could claim. She was Romilly who lived among the beasts of hill and forest and communicated with them, who tried humanity and turned it down for its evils and jealousies. She had the MacAran gift, the rare laran that conferred mastery over hawk and horse.

There was war in the lands of Darkover, for this was the age of chaos when usurpers took the throne and the true king wandered in disguise with a price on his head. Romilly wanted none of all this, but there were those who shared her talents—the men and women of the Towers. And for them, Romilly was the key.

Whether male-garbed or beast-minded, she was also human. And duty to her own true kind pointed her to the ultimate decision.

Appraise Of Books Vládkyně jestřábů (Darkover - Publication Order #16)
I loved this book, it is my favorite out of the series that I have read so far. Romy was so real to me. I really hoped to see her in a future story as she traveled her path in life and evolved.

Slow start, but worth the read.

I had read this coming of age novel when I was much younger, and remember being irritated at the patriarchal gender-role-bound society in which it is set. This time around, it didn't just irritate me, it made me angry. However, that first quarter of the book is necessary so that you understand Romilly, our main character, in her journey past societal expectations. Trigger warnings for abuse and attempted rape.

Hawkmistress!, along with most of the late Marion Zimmer Bradley's Darkover series, continues to hold pride of place on my bookshelves. Even after all these years, the tale of the intrepid and independent Romilly MacArran feels fresh. In fact, the story reminds me exactly WHY fantasy with strong heroines continues to appeal to me. It also reminds me of what a lot of today's YA books (and for that matter, most of New Adult AND romance) could use--which mainly consists of female characters whose

This feminist fantasy novel was one of my favourites by MZB.

Being a fan of Darkover I am a bit biased, it is a good one!

I have read none of the Darkover fantasy series before; this was the first and it was very good. Romilly MacAran is the main character of the novel with a gift of laran, psychic powers inherited from her father, which allows her to train horses and birds. In fact, it is the threat of losing the hawk she trained that is the last straw that sends her running from home and the arranged marriage to an lecherous, old widower. Romilly dresses as a boy, has adventures, gets out of scrapes, learns more
