Written in a stream of consciousness format, this Noel kept me involved in the emotional pilgrimage of the protagonist--from the struggle to save another and stay alive himself in the sea, to the loss of his wife in an untimely death, to an opting out of living a normal life, to the depravities of the soul, to the final realization of how he can only be a good father if he opts back in. This journey shows both the darkness of the human psyche and a resolution of how coming to terms with one's



To a great extent this book lived up to the high expectations I had, but it also disappointed me somewhat. Veronesi is a skilled writer who can bring both action scenes (the strong opening scene for example) and multi-layered introspective scenes to a good end (a bit like Tim Parks); he's a clever narrator who offers more than a funny story. To grieve or not to grieve? Or can you just hit the pause button untill you decide? And what can you learn by just being an observer in a " quiet chaos"? Definetely a fast read, magnificent writing style and (I suppose) language.

I am not sure how I came by this book but am glad I read it. Nevertheless, the disappointing ending** brought down its rating. All that for nothing. Kudos to the interpreter/translator for bringing it alive to the English language. **SPOILER ALERT - His final realization that he never really loved the deceased spoiled it for me. Duh, considering he never really gave much thought to missing her and was more concerned about what he would do if his daughter died.

Just when you think you can't do it anymore ( the section where he's reading her email) keep going... you won't regret finishing this book.The first few pages suck you in FAST... and then somehow, even though the guy really barely moves from in front of his daughters school you will not be able to put it down. Veronesi get's in side this man's mind, and there is a journey of character..... enjoy!
