I don't remember so muchbut the memory that stuck in my mind is good, and at that moment i was fascinated about the stuff learned. <3

What I expected: a marine adventure. What I got instead: an account of racism and slavery and a fascinating insight into the mind of a 19th century man. But I'm not going to touch upon the more controversial subjects here. What I want to mention is this: surprisingly, from the literary standpoint the book is far from perfect. The characters are awfully cliched, the storyline barely plausible, the writing style a bit rough (though I'm ready to blame this one on translation). But oh, the imagery!

The book is about a young man, Dick Sands (as the title suggests) who unexpectedly becomes a ship captain at 15 and about his adventures.It was definitely an intense read -- very wordy but the overall storyline was pretty good. Some great characters, however I feel like some characters could have had more development. Likewise with the story -- the author definitely elaborated parts which I didn't enjoy yet the happy parts which I wanted more of, there was a lot of skimming going on.I would



I read this first time when I was 12 or something like that and learned quite a lot from this book!I also got myself scared to death, so I learned some of my first techniques to deal with fear. A couple of things in this novel scared the daylights out of me. One of them was the way one of the villains in the book changed the course of the ship by sticking a magnet under the compass. For some reason, that got me truly scared -- to the point that I couldn't fall asleep!Because of this treachery
