Spot on satire about corruption. Quick read, quite funny.Within the 96 pages, Gogol sums up a typical societal behavior, complete with the corrupt, inept officials, their sycophants...all and sundry and without omitting the humor. How i wish a government inspector would swing by our localities soon.
Almost George-Bernard-Shaw-esque. With a lot of potential for physical comedy. The inevitable question becomes-- how does this compare with the Danny Kaye film of the same name? And, like most adaptations, my answer would be: there are good points to both.

I was looking forward to this play, but although the translator's introduction praised it to the skies, I ended up not being able to get too interested. It may have shown the standard operating procedure of the corrupt Russian officials of the day, and it certainly was funny at times, but it was also predictable.When I read something and think 'oh, this or that is going to happen', I write down the idea and then see how long it takes to come true, if at all. This time I was right on every count.
