Explanation Toward Books In the Land of the Living Dead - An Occult Story
So many books are written only to be mostly forgotten. It's easy to forget Dickens and Shakespeare are the exception and not the rule. This is a fine example of that. I think it's fair to say In the Land of the Living Dead has mostly been lost to the sands of time. This fact is somewhat sad. I would have never even heard of it, much less read it, but for a strange sequence of events. My wife is a librarian, and one of her patrons is quite elderly and mostly blind. He informed her that In the Land of the Living Dead was his favorite book but he, because of his vision loss, couldn't read it anymore. As a result, my wife asked me create an amateur audio book for him so he could listen to it. I did and I am glad I had the opportunity.
Certainly the novel is not exactly a masterpiece but, still, I found the book admirable in many ways. It gave a fascinating look into the practices and beliefs of Roscrucianism. This obscure branch of Christianity fuses Christian doctrine with occult practices and beliefs. I was largely unfamiliar with the sect and I enjoyed learning about.
The book did not convert me, but I do admire the positive spiritual outlook that Rocrucianism and the book advocates. Some of their beliefs are quite odd but any philosophy that see life as an opportunity for spiritual and intellectual growth and advocates that all of humanity as worthy of redemption will get respect from me.
Nevertheless, the book does have structural problems. The plot (what little there is) is scattershot, and the book ends abruptly and without a clear conclusion. The characters are not terribly deep either.
Still the book is a curiosity that I'm glad I got to experience. Its optimism was touching and it is an excellent opportunity to learn about an obscure religious practice few of us are familiar with.
