Before his brain began to shrink, Barney Panofsky clung to two cherished beliefs. Life was absurd, and nobody truly understood anybody else. But when his sworn enemy threatens to publish this calumny, Barney is driven to write his own memoirs, rewinding the spool of his life, editing, selecting and plagiarising, as his memory plays tricks on him - and on the reader. Ebullient and perverse, he has seen off 3 wives - the enigmatic Clara, whom he drove to suicide in Paris in 1952; the garrulous Second Mrs Panofsky; and finally Miriam who stayed married to him for decades before running off with a sober academic. Criticism Regarding Books Barney's Version

I love this motherfucking book.

In my all-time top five, EASY. Since Richler is in the Canadian canon, and I thought it would be great to say "hey yeah I've read him" instead of pretending that I have, I gave this a go. Despite having already seen the film and enjoyed it, my expectations were middling. This novel took said expectations, threw them in the air, and blew them apart with a giant bazooka gun. I was surprised that I ended up liking this book because through a majority of it, I was fed up with the vulgarity of the main character and most of his rantings. This is also I book I wouldn't recommend to everyone, because not only how vulgar it is at times, but many parts of it are long and tedious to read. Most of Barney's Version is structured as an autobiography of a bitter old curmudgeon. Barney, the titular protagonist, is trying to proclaim his innocence - both of the crime of murdering his friend Boogie (for which he had been acquitted, by the law) and of the more general charge of being a bastard and a sycophant. He totally fails at the latter - in fact, Barney is so uncharitable, so grating, that (his humor notwithstanding) the reader begins to tire of his voice by the end of the book.All
